Marching Forth

Enjoying oysters on March "forth" (4th)
at the brewery on South Padre Island.
Wendy took the pics of "the siblings"--Kathy, Jerry, Bob--
having fun in Progreso, Mexico. Diane stayed home
to go to line dancing class. :-)
On Sunday, the 13th, we went to Los Ebanos
to ride the hand-operated ferry across the Rio Grande.
We paid $2.00 to ride the ferry to Mexico.
View from the U.S. side--
you can see that the river is not very wide
Cars on the Mexican side are waiting
to come to the U.S.
About six or seven men push and pull
the rope to propel the ferry across the river.
The cable keeps it from floating downstream.
Bob "helped" maneuver the ropes on our ride.
Mexican customs office
The water control and measurement station in Mexico
Cars loading on the Mexican side.
The shelter in the background is the lunch area
for the men who work the boat.  Their lunches
are in the backpacks hanging in the shelter.
We had to go through U.S. customs when we got back...
The General Store at Ebanos Junction
The Ebanos bar...founded in 1870
Los Ebanos is a small poor village. We found
this church down one of the streets.
This Brahmin bull was in the yard next to the church.
He was apparently not a wild bull because
he let Bob pet him.  Poor thing looked hungry.
When we drove away from Los Ebanos,
Bob spotted this dirigible and we couldn't
get very close. It is used to take pics of
people crossing the border illegally.
Then we drove to the Museum of South Texas History
to see the exhibit about Women on the Warfront.
They focused on women from the area who had served
in World War II.  There was also a video interview
with a 98-year-old lady veteran who talked about the war.

Aunt Pauline was in the WACs, but I never
knew any of the history, so I took a picture.
We also explored the rest of the museum,
and I liked this Mammoth display.
While we were learning Texas history,
Jimmy and his boys were skiing in North Dakota.
Ana's girls and their cousin were skiing in Minnesota.
Sara's family was skiing in Pennsylvania.
RJ wouldn't get his pic taken, so Julia
on the left had a friend in hers.
but we caught RJ on the "last hurrah"
of ski season for Sara and Doug's family.
While Julia was getting buried in the snow,
Trina's family drove to Florida to play in the sand and ocean.
Waiting in the food line at the park picnic on March 19th
Eating brats, chips, and cookies at the annual
end-of-year park picnic.
Wendy and Dennis each won a door prize!
We had the lucky table.
Doin' the "chicken dance"
Horse race...the red die picks the horse; the white one
determines how many spaces it moves. Five races, six
horses, 25 cents per horse for each race.  I usually
bet on all six because I hate to lose! :-)
The winners split the money that was bet on that race.
Went to see "Death by the Drop" in the old
water tower theater in Weslaco. The theater idea
was developed by a lady named Marguerite,
so they had free Margaritas and wine.
It was a murder mystery and the audience
decided "who done it".  Our audience decided
that it was the guy on the left wearing the apron.
March 21st is Winter Texan Day in Mexico.
This year a business on the US side of the bridge
decided to celebrate, too.
The margaritas were free.
There were a lot of "arts and crafts" for sale....
These chairs sold for $300 each.
A mariachi group provided music indoors;
there was a DJ outside in the tent area.
Making tortillas for the free lunch. Eerie
artwork is for the Day of the Dead (Nov. 2nd)
All Soul's day.
We decided to go to Nana's for "lonchies"
instead of waiting for food at the fiesta.
Kathy, Jerry, Bob, and Wendy went
to South Padre Island on Tuesday. Bob rode his bike
from Clayton's on the north end to the south park.
They ate at the Hopper Haus which
is designed after "Starbase"
And later went to Davey Jones' Locker for ice cream.
Meanwhile, Diane was at Line Dancing class with
Brigetta, Rhonda, Paul (the teacher in the background),
Terry (former next door neighbor in our RV park)
Tina (in white shorts, Paul's wife), and Paulette
on the far right. Most of the class members have
already left for home.
On Wednesday, Wendy and Diane treated
Nancy and Kathy to lunch at Colletti's
for their birthdays.
Nancy and Kathy with their 75 cake
during the UND hockey game on Thursday.
Our last line dancing class was on Friday.
Most of the people had left in the past week.
On Friday night, I went to play Bingo
at Citrus across the fence from our park.
I had been trying to get to play with Irene
for quite a while.  She won two games that night--
her first wins all season!
They have 135 different Bingo "games"
I tried to keep up with four cards,
but sometimes I forgot which rows
we were playing that game!
Wendy took this pic of our pickleball group
on Saturday morning. Bob, Ron & Shirley, Terry,
Diane, John, and Ray (who was leaving on Sunday).
This is as good as it gets---third out of 78,
but I went down to 13th after Miami lost. :-(
The only pick I have left is Villanova.
